If you live around Colchester, Braintree or north-east Essex, don’t assume your best options will always be south of you.
Suffolk can make just as much sense.
Red Lodge is a good example.
It’s not a circuit you’d necessarily choose because you’ve been watching races there on television for years. That’s not really the point.
The appeal is practicality.
Driving experiences are often booked around available dates, available cars and how far you’re prepared to travel. A track can look perfect on paper, but if the only suitable date is three months later than you wanted, it’s suddenly not so perfect.
That’s why we’d always compare a few venues.
If Red Lodge has the cars you want and a date that works, choosing it over a more famous circuit can be an easy decision.

Wattisham
Wattisham is another venue worth checking if you’re based towards the eastern side of Essex.
For someone in Colchester, travelling towards Suffolk may feel far more natural than heading across the county and down towards Kent.

In reality, the easiest track to reach may be just over the county border.

If Carver Barracks gives you the same car on a convenient date, staying closer to Essex makes sense.
But if you’re buying for someone who knows their circuits, watches racing at weekends and gets excited about the track almost as much as the cars, Snetterton is a completely different proposition.
For that person, the journey is part of the day.
So, Which Track Should You Actually Choose?
It depends more on the driver than the circuit.
Carver Barracks will suit a lot of people because it’s local, relatively straightforward and gives you a good environment to experience the cars without overcomplicating things.
Brands Hatch is more appealing if the person driving already loves motorsport and wants the circuit to feel special.
Lydden Hill is a nice middle ground if you want a proper circuit with plenty happening during the lap.
If you’re based around Colchester or north-east Essex, we’d also look towards Suffolk before automatically travelling south.
And Snetterton?

“Near Essex” is a fairly broad description.
